What is a Disabled Refuge EVC System?
British Standard BS5588-8 requires certain buildings to be constructed with "refuge" areas for disabled persons to wait for rescue in the event of an emergency. The same standard states "..there must be a system of communications between those people temporarily waiting in each refuge and those members of the building management who are organising the evacuation the building." A disabled refuge EVC (emergency voice communication) system is the equipment that provides the means of communication between the disabled refuges and the control room. It is a 'intercom' system with special features to increase usability and reliability in the event of an emergency. BS5839-9 states that ".. the main purpose of an EVC in a building or complex is to support the fire safety strategy of the building or complex".
Do You Need a Disabled Refuge EVC System?
According to BS5839-9 "..the need for EVC in any specific building on complex will normally be determined by the authority responsible for enforcing fire legislation in that building".
